Murat Cem Mengüç "Toxic Landscape" 2019
From the 'Erasures' Collection
Medium: Ink on Archival Paper
Dimensions: 22.5" x 30”
Erasures is a series of ink paintings on acid free paper, focusing on ecology, industrial decay, climate migration, interstellar exploration and artificial environments. They are hand painted replicas of digitally erased photographs coming from my own collection.
Each piece starts from a popular and copyright free photograph from internet or a photograph I took. I first digitally erase these images. Afterwards they are projected/traced on paper. Finally hand colored and painted. The inspiration behind this series is our planets current ecological decay and global warming due to industrial capitalist obsession with overproduction and consumption. Maintenance of this economic and ecologic downward spiral made humanity to normalize many wrong actions, such as migration, genetically modified agriculture, destroying the environment, collecting unmaintainable amount of data, selling of that data for money, spying on ourselves, artificial intelligence, as well as dreaming about colonizing other planets so we can maintain our pathologies.
